  • On 16 November, ICG's Managing Director, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr, shared updated research and analysis on Canada's international education performance in a session at the 50th CBIE Annual Conference in Ottawa, Canada.  The session on Is Canada's International Competitiveness Declining? was joined by four panelists: Prof. Gary Slater from the University of Ottawat, Dr. Ian Humphries  from Langara College, Dr. Randall Martin from BCCIE, and Tina Bax from CultureWorks.

 

 

  • On 3 November, ICG presented at the annual conference of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) in Toronto, Canada.  The presentation on Access for International Graduate Students focused on comparative enrollment trends of international Master's and doctoral students, as well as Canada's ability to attract talented students.

 

  • ICG is pleased to announce the hire of Lea-Anne Allen as an analyst.  She joined ICG from Macquarie University and previously the University of Adelaide.  Her focus will be on serving ICG's Australian clients.

  • On 8 April, ICG presented the findings from a research report to CIMO, Finland's international mobility and co-operation agency, on the introduction of international student tuition fees in Finland.  Research covered national education promotion agencies, national scholarship schemes, a fees roll-out road map until the fall of 2017, and the findings from a survey of Finnish universities.  The 102 page report on The Introduction of Tuition Fees for non-EU Students in Finland: Perspectives and Implications, and corresponding presentations are available to Finnish stakeholders.

  • On 16 February 2016, the British Columbia Ministry of Education released the summary version of a report ICG authored on Secondary to Post-Secondary Education Pathways for International Students in British Columbia (the report can be accessed at the Ministry's website).  The report offers a sweeping survey of pathways of international students from secondary schools in BC as well as Dogwood Diploma issuing schools outside of BC into BC-based post-secondary institutions.  The full 305 page report was completed in 2014.

  • On 20 January 2016, ICG delivered a workshop to Finnish higher education stakeholders on behalf of the Centre for International Mobility CIMO in Helsinki.  This workshop served as the starting point for a CIMO-commissioned project focused on advising Finnish higher education institutions on the introduction of tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students.

  • At the QS Young Universities Forum in Melbourne on 24 November, ICG's Lead Analyst, Nelson Furtado, presented on Rankings Optimisation for Young Universities.  The presentation drew on ICG's analysis of 18 international university rankings as well as QS's break-out ranking of universities under the age of 50 years.

 

  • The Canadian Bureau for International Education's 2016 A World of Learning report featured a chapter by ICG on Perspectives on Canada’s Pathways Program Landscape authored by Nelson Furtado and Dr. Daniel J. Guhr.

 

  • A workshop on Trends And Developments In Three Key Recruiting Markets For Canada: China, India and the U.S.  Co-presenters included Dr. Sheila Embleton, the former Provost of York University and Dr. Cen Huang, the Assistant Vice-President (International) at the University of Alberta.

  • A session on How Venture Capital, Global Competition, and New Dogmas are Reshaping the Language Sector in Canada.  Panelists included Tina Bax, the CEO of CultureWorks; Dr. Joanna Fox, the Director of the University of British Columbia’s Vantage College; Mike Walkey, the Director of ELS Language Centres in Canada; and Geoff Wilmshurst, the Director International of Camosun College.

 

  • At the annual Class of 2020 conference from 3-4 November in Amsterdam, an ICG article on The Strategic Value of Quality Student Housing Capacity for Universities was released as part of the Class of 2020 Annual Trend Report.

  • At the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) Higher Education Symposium in Rotterdam from 27-29 October, ICG's Managing Director, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr, will co-present with the University of Oxford and the University of British Columbia on Effectively Using Student Data to Predict Performance.  The presentation will highlight the nexus between IB Diploma subject scores and post-secondary academic achievement in similar and dis-similar subject areas.

 

  • On 15 October, ICG's Lead Analyst Nelson Furtado presented at the Academic Cooperation Association seminar on 12 Years With Global University Rankings - a Panoramic (Re)view and an Update on Recent Developments in Brussels.  The presentation centers on a survey of 18 active international university rankings and their methodological and contextual differences.

 

  • On 2 October at the NACAC annual conference in San Diego, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr co-presented with Herman de Leeuw from the Dutch Ministry of Education on Fraud in International Education: How to Ensure Admission Integrity.  The session will draw on ICG's comprehensive research of fraudulent behavior and new information on the activities of the Groningen Network.

  • During the 26th annual European Association for International Education (EAIE) conference, ICG will chair or contribute to a total of five sessions:
  • ICG Strategy Session.  Rankings Session with QS and U-Multirank: How to Strategically Drive Marketing and Recruitment through Rankings.  The heads of the U-Multirank and QS rankings will share perspectives on how rankings assist universities with communicating to prospective students, policy-makers, scholarship agencies, and employers alike.  The Provost of Memorial University and a representative of Macquarie Universities will share perspectives on their institutional  engagement with rankings.  ICG will highlight research on the uses and utility of the currently 15 international university rankings.  Chair: Daniel J.   • ICG Strategy Session.  A Global Benchmarking of 3,000 English language Master’s Programs: 2015 Version.  As the competition between universities to attract highly qualified international graduate students grows increasingly fierce, many Master’s programs have not adapted to these students’ demand.  This session introduces ICG’s Global Master’s Program Design Benchmarking (GMPD): GMPD compares Master’s degree programs offered by leading universities worldwide to identify design elements across the marketing-recruiting-admissions-onboarding-services-alumni lifecycle that effectively attract international students.  Chair: Daniel J.   • EAIE Conference Session with ICG.  A Holistic Approach to Student Interaction: Best Practices, Research and Literature.  Universities interact with international students in many ways before, during and after their studies, yet interactions typically occur in a fragmented manner. This session will explore this situation by connecting marketing, recruiting, admissions, student services and alumni and career planning.   • EAIE Conference Session with ICG.  State of Play: Insights from Benchmarking Master’s Programmes at 15 European Universities.  English-language Master's programmes attract more than 100 000 international students to European universities each year. Yet the way these programmes are marketed, elements of curricular design, and post-studies trajectories differ notably. This session will share the results of an in-depth benchmarking project of more than 1,000 Master's programmes at 15 European universities, focusing specifically on lessons learned and the potential for increased cooperation going forward.  Chair: Daniel J.   • EAIE Conference Session with ICG.  International Students: Cash Cows or Agents for Change?  With more than two million international students, Europe is the world’s top study abroad destination with English-taught programmes, generous visa regulations and excellent career opportunities among the assets attracting international students. However, continental European universities which have traditionally refrained from charging tuition fees are in an era of ongoing financial crisis. Steadily rising international student numbers make it tempting to rethink this policy and join in the global debate over fees. Fierce global competition and different approaches to internationalisation are raising some fundamental questions that all higher education institutions should consider before ‘going global’. Which services need to be offered to justify the introduction of fees? In which way do tuition fees influence an institution’s attractiveness? Is fee-derived income invested in improving student experience for all, and do the fees charged reflect the quality of education offered? Are there good reasons to offer fee-free education for all? This dialogue will explore all this and more by bringing together experts with differing viewpoints from the UK, Germany, France and Sweden.  Chair: John Gill, Times Higher Education.   • Based on extensive client work, ICG has released its International Rankings Analysis Capability overview.  The overview includes details on the dozen international rankings ICG covers: ARWU, CWTS Leiden, LinkedIn, NTU/HEEACT, QS, SCImago, THE, Trendence/Emerging, U-Multirank, URAP, U.S. News, and Webometrics.  ICG offers analysis and advice across 12 modules, ranging from in-depth performance analysis to communication and global academic networking models to rankings performance optimization.

  • On 29 June, ICG released a report on International Students Pathways in Canada.  The report, for the first time, aggregates data from a wide array of sources, including more than 80 pathway programs, to estimate the number of pathway seats by category (academic ESL, EAP, Foundation and Award - second year entry).  Additionally, the report includes scenarios regarding the number of pathway seats by category for 2020.  

 

  • At the BCCIE Summer Seminar from 20 to 24 June in Whistler, British Columbia, ICG will co-deliver a workshop and session:
    • The workshop on How to Use Concepts, Data, and Processes to Drive Competitive International Admissions Performance will be jointly delivered with Michael Holaday (Sauder School of Business, UBC) and Ajay Patel (Langara College).
    • A session titled How Expensive is BC Really for International Students? Results from the Largest International Study Cost Database will be co-delivered with Ajay Patel (Langara College) and Angela Olson (Surrey School District).

 

  • On 11 June, the IREG Observatory on Academic Rankings and Excellence (IREG Observatory) admitted ICG as a full member at the IREG Forum on Subject Discipline Related Rankings in Aalborg, Denmark.  The IREG Observatory is a non-profit association which operates as the international university rankings discussion platform of record.

  • At the 2015 NAFSA Annual Conference in Boston from 24 to 29 May, ICG hosted seven sessions together with eight university representatives:
    • 6th Nordic Region Strategy Session – Attracting Talented Master’s Students.  This session for representatives from Nordic Region countries discussed how the recruiting of international Master’s students can address both academic talent (doctoral studies) and skills needs (labor market) of Nordic universities in light of global recruiting trends of graduate students.  Presenters included Fridrika Hardardottir (University of Iceland) and Trine Sand (University of Copenhagen).
    • 2015 Global Master’s Benchmarking Launch: Designing Modern Master’s Degrees for International Students.  This session launched the 2015 ICG Global Master’s Benchmarking Model which will include sweeping analysis on more than 2,000 programs from more than 40 institutions worldwide.  It follows the 2014 version that included more than 1,000 programs from 15 leading European universities.  Presenters included Britta Baron (University of Alberta) and Markus Laitinen (University of Helsinki).
    • 4th Tuition Fees Strategy Session: Competing on Cost, Value, and Strategy.  International higher education students spent more than $ 155 billion on fees and cost of living in 2014.  This session unpacked details of their spending based on ICG’s international fees database (ITBCD) which contains more than 11,000 programs from 170 ranked universities.  Presenters included Nicole Brigg (Macquarie University) and Stefan Lauterbach (LMU Munich).
    • 5th Australia Strategy Session: International and Domestic Fees – Choosing between Madness and Greatness.  This session for representatives from Australia focused on the on-going saga of fees deregulation in Australia and how said might impact international student fees.  Scenarios of fees models will be shared and practitioners will highlight their institutions’ perspectives.  Presenters included Nicole Brigg (Macquarie University) and Peter Frappell (UTas).
    • 5th Canada Strategy Session – A Spotlight on International Student Pathways.  Pathways have become a key avenue for international students to enter Canadian universities and colleges.  ICG shared results from the benchmarking of more than 80 Canadian pathways programs as well as a forecast of the market share of pathways students in 2020.  The session was chaired by Wendy Luther, President of EduNova.
    • 3rd International Rankings Session: Coordinating an Institution-wide Approach to Rankings.  International Rankings have become a hotly debated topic, yet most rankings remain poorly understood.  This session shared in-depth analysis on the strength, weaknesses, and reliability of key international rankings such as ARWU/Shanghai, QS, THE, and U.S. News – and how institutions should rationally engage rankings.  Speakers included Daniela Seskar-Hencic from the University of Waterloo.
    • 2nd New Zealand Strategy Session – Updates on New Zealand’s International Education Progress.  This by invitation-only session focused on sharing information on New Zealand’s recent progress in the international education arena.
  • At the 2015 Association of Language Travel Organisations (ALTO) Conference from 7 to 9 May in New York, ICG’s Managing Director, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr, presented as a Keynote Speaker on Four Change Drivers of Future Language Travel: Disruption, Fragmentation, Brand Consolidation, and Bespoke Offerings.
  • At the 2015 Canadian Association of Public Schools – International (CAPS-I) conference from 3 to 6 May in Fredericton, New Brunswick, ICG Analyst Nelson Furtado presented findings from a research project on A Comparative Market Assessment of the K-12 International Student Sector.

  • On 8 April, ICG co-hosted the English Language Master’s Program Benchmarking and Design Symposium together with the University of Copenhagen.  The Symposium will discuss the results of ICG's benchmarking of more than 1,000 English language Master's programs at 15 leading European universities.  Speakers from the following universities will share institutional perspectives: Copenhagen, Groningen, Helsinki, LMU Munich, Lund, and Utrecht.
  • On behalf of the Canadian Association of Public Schools - International (CAPS-I), ICG completed a report on A Comparative Market Assessment of International K-12 Students in Canada.  The 140 page report discusses Canada and eight other countries: Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK, and the U.S.  The report covers enrollment trends, national and state/provincial-level policies, and the cost of attendance (tuition fees and cost of living such as homestay and boarding options).

  • NAFSA's International Educator Magazine reported on international education trends in the Nordic Region, including the University of Copenhagen's strategic initiatives which reference ICG's work on behalf of the University.  Published in Looking Further Afield (March & April 2015 edition).
  • At the 2015 SIU conference in Tromso, Norway, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr delivered a presentation on Norway's Position in International Student Mobility Seen Through a Nordic Lens.  Co-presenters included representatives from Chalmers University and the University of Copenhagen.
  • At the 2015 Languages Canada Annual Conference from 1 to 3 March in Ottawa, ICG's Managing Director, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr, presented on Four Change Drivers in Language Travel.  Study Travel Magazine covered this presentation in an editorial comment.

  • In February, ICG released Version 4 of its International Tuition-based Competition Database (ITBCD).  ITBCD Version 4 encompasses data from 155 ranked universities located in 20 countries, including 54 universities ranked in the Top 100 worldwide.  ITBCD covers tuition fees, added fees, cost of living, and the Total Cost of Degree Acquisition (TCODA).  ITBCD allows for in-depth benchmarking and modeling of fees based on a dynamic dashboard.

  • On 18 November, ICG presented the results of the Canada's Capacity for International Student Enrollment research report at  the Canadian National Education Marketing Roundtable (NEMR) in Ottawa.  The report was commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAIT) Canada.  The report will be made publicly available by January 2012.  The presentation from 18 November will be made available in both English and French in December.

  • On Tuesday, 13 September, ICG hosted an Internationalization Strategy Roundtable, which served as the 2011 ICG ICG Thought Leader Session at EAIE. The Roundtable was limited to a dozen senior administrators and experts and will discuss issues such as: Who actually “owns” internationalization? Are we going to experience a “student as consumer” driven homogenization? If internationalization is so important, why are institutional leaders beginning to move into different directions (by invitation only; no public documentation is being made available)?  

 

  • On Wednesday, 14 September, ICG hosted the Canada Pathways Meeting.   The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) chaired the session.  ICG released results from the currently underway Canada-wide CCIEM pathways survey. The CCIEM Pathways project is supported by CCIEM’s member organizations AUCC, ACCC, CAPS-I, Languages Canada, and CBIE.   • On Wednesday, 14 September, ICG hosted the Australia Strategy Outlook Session.  The session was chaired by Griffith University.  ICG shared its analysis of the drastic change dynamics in international student intake patterns in Australia based on ICG’s International Student Analytics and Flow Model (ISAFM), which is based on 1.9 million data points and 120+ variables.   • On Wednesday, 14 September, ICG hosted the Sweden Universities Session.  Linköping University chaired the session.  ICG discussed international recruiting perspectives for Swedish universities. This fall, around 1,200 fee-paying students are expected to enroll following the introduction of tuition fees for non-EEA students – a fraction of past free mover intake numbers. The session looked at causes, competitive context, as well as marketing, recruiting, and relationship options to address this decline.   • On Wednesday, 14 September, ICG’s Managing Director, Dr. Daniel Guhr, chaired the EAIE Dialogue One Creating a Global Environment for International Higher Education. Questions such as “Is there a difference between international higher education and higher education in the global context?” were explored by a range of panelists, among which feature Eva Egron-Polak, International Association of Universities, France; Marijk van der Wende, Amsterdam University College, Netherlands; Eva Åkesson, Lund University, Sweden; and Alberto Rodriguez, The World Bank Education Department Europe and Central Asia Region, USA.  The organizational file can be downloaded here.

 

  • On Thursday, 15 September, ICG releasd its Web 3.0 in Higher Education report featuring 15 case studies on Marketing, Recruiting, Alumni, Outreach, and Fundraising. The session presented analysis of best practices and strategies ranging from student recruiting models on Facebook and LinkedIn to admissions testimonials on YouTube to internal alumni platforms to web-based governmental outreach efforts. The report drew on ICG’s Silicon Valley location, coupled with ICG's international education strategy and institutional development advisory practices. The session took place in conjunction with Andrew Shaindlin (Alumni Futures) and Mauro Mondino (Hertie School of Governance and ICG) who presented his 2010 ICG Summer Internship research (by invitation only).  The presentation file can be downloaded here.

 

  • On Friday, 16 September, ICG releaseed Version 1-2 of the International Student Analytics and Forecasting (ISAFM) Model. ISAFM is a global student flow forecast model based on more than 1.9 million data points and more than 120 variables. ISAFM forecasts are based on multiple criteria, including degree level, gender, and study field. ISAFM reflects on client work ICG has undertaken worldwide as much as on ICG’s academic heritage of in-depth quantitative analysis.  ISAFM Version 1 was released to clients in April 2011.   • On Friday, 16 September, ICG chaired and spoke at an EAIE session on Reversing Old Paradigms: How Students use Web 2.0 to Counterbalance Institutional Control of the Recruiting Process (Session 10.11). The recruitment of international students has undergone many changes, especially with Web 2.0 technologies being introduced, yet insufficient attention has been paid to how the corresponding behavior of students has changed as well.  This session reflected on case studies and research, which will present examples of student behavior and institutional responses.  Delia de Vreeze from the University of Wageningen spoke next to Dr. Daniel Guhr from ICG.  The presentation file can be downloaded here.

 

  • On Friday, 16 September, ICG chaired and presented in an EAIE session on International Alumni as Talent Scouts: Does the Promise Really Hold Up? (Session 5.22). The role of international alumni – assistance with recruiting the next generation of students – has been discussed for a good number of years. Yet evidence if and how this concept truly works remains sparse and, most importantly, no clarity has been achieved about who is in charge.   • In April, two ICG Advisory Board members announced new leadership positions:
  • Dr. Kirk Simmons took up the role of Director of Global Relations at the Pennsylvania State University.  He had previously served as the Executive Director for International Affairs at the University of Arizona.
  • Andrew Shaindlin will become the Associate Vice President for Advancement as well as the Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Development at Carnegie Mellon University on 1 June.  He previously served as the Executive Director of the Caltech Alumni Association as well as the Acting Asstistant Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at Caltech.

 

  • On 11 April, ICG released the results of a multi-year, interdisciplinary project on modeling and forecasting international student flows - the International Students Analytics and Forecasting Model (ISAFM) (release report).   The first client project was jointly conducted with the British Columbia Council for International Education (BCCIE), Okanagan College, Capilano University, and Simon Fraser University.  The public release of ISAFM took place on 11 April at the Simon Fraser University's Harbour Centre in Vancouver, BC.  ISAFM is based on 1.9 million data points, 128 variables, and a set of statistical and forecaating methodologies including System Dynamics, Bayesian  probablity analysis, multi-variate regressions, and machine based learning (MBL).

  • On 18 February, ICG's Managing Director, Dr. Daniel J. Guhr will lead a webinar on behalf of the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) on Utilizing Web 2.0 Platforms and Communities.  The webinar discusses how "Web 2.0 communities will continue to change, shape, and disrupt the way students socialize and communicate, as much as the manner in which universities must reach out to them, or how promotion agencies can market a country as a study destination.  It will draw on case studies as well as technical and policy analyses ICG has compiled for a recent Web 2.0 report."

  • Handbook for Leverage and Network Strategy (92 p.).  The Handbook is structured into four chapters.  Chapter 1 covers general background, methodology information, and limitations.  Chapter 2 discusses changing parameters and startegies with regards to conference attendance.  Chapter 3 covers twelve conferences: AIEA, AIEC, APAIE, CONAHEC, EAIE, Going Global, NAFSA, and QS Apple in details, and CAIE, ENZ, IEHE, adn QS MAPLE in brief capsules.  Chapter 4 provides a toolkit which includes a Decision-Making Matrix, conference planners, and recommendaitons how to attend a conference in a low resource mode.
  • Appendix I (98 p.).  The first Appendix includes graphs and detailed data tables covering the twelve conferences.  Data are from 2009 and 2010.

  • ICG is pleased to announce the award of three January 2011 internship positions:
  • Yannis Valtis, Harvard University.  Yannis Valtis is a junior at Harvard University, studying Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology. He currently works at the Center for Regenerative Medicine of the Massachusetts General Hospital as a student researcher, investigating events of regeneration in the adult brain under normal conditions and in cancer.
  • William Chen, Harvard University.  William Chen is a first-year student at Harvard University studying Mathematics and Statistics. He has undertaken research with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Over the academic year, he is working on the staff for IMUSE (Initiating Mutual Understanding through Student Exchange), where he will help develop a cross-cultural student exchange in Beijing.
  • Xumin Hu, UC Berkeley.  Xumin Hu is a third year business administration and political science double major from the University of California, Berkeley. He has over one and a half years of research experience at the Political Science department at Berkeley. He has also served on the Academic Senate as a student representative.

 

  • ICG is pleased to annouce the awarding of two Master's Thesis sponsorship awards for 2011 at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.  Recipients are:

  • Dr. Kirk Simmons joined ICG's Academic Advisory Board.  Dr. Simmons serves as the Executive Director of the International Affairs Division at the University of Arizona.  He previously served at the Universities of Oregon, Oregon State, and Missouri, as well as at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.  Dr. Simmons holds a B.S. degree in Psychology and General Science and an M.B.A from the University of Oregon.  He completed his Ph.D. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Missouri, with a research focus on aspects of multinational technology transfer.

  • On 20 October, ICG released a report on International Student Pathways in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand in a session organized by the Canadian Consortium for International Education Marketing (CCIEM).
  • On 21 October, ICG presented the results of a 300+ pages research report on Web 2.0 Tools, Platforms, and Communities in a Web 2.0 workshop.  Presenters include Abigail Kimball (Princeton University) and NN (Hertie School of Governance).
  • On 22 October, ICG presented in a session on the Future of International Education together with Jeanette Velez (Universidad del Rosario, Columbia) and Jean-Philippe Tachjian (Department of Fortein Affairs and Trade Canada).
  • On 13 October, ICG released the 2010 EAIE Exhibition Hall Impressions Capsule.  The Impressions Capsule contains a brief analysis of 25 national presences based on a set of seven factors ranging from staff competence to design to the quality of collateral.  Capsules are produced by ICG researchers as part of their analytical training.  This Capsule is available to ICG clients and select third parties.

  • ICG completed a report on behalf of the New Zealand Ministry of Education titled New Zealand Alumni Survey - Experienced, Attitudes, and Engagement.  This report covers the first ever global survey of a nation's higher education alumni.  It produced more than 320,000 data points and covered more than 3,400 alumni.  It was jointly executed with New Zealand's eight universities.  The report was released by the Ministry on 23 October and can be downloaded in full from the Ministry's Education Counts website.

 

  • ICG completed a report on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Canada (DFAIT) titled Best Practices on Managing the Delivery of Canadian Education Marketing.  The report includes a benchmarking section which covers Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand. the United Kingdom, and the United States.  It also comments on Canada's international education marketing performance and landscape up to now.  This 230+ pages report is slated for release by DFAIT in November 2009.

Guhr from ICG presented on how universities have become aware of the potential of social networking sites for marketing and recruiting purposes, but still must decide which Web 2.0 platforms to engage in.  This session deals with the question of which communities work for higher education purposes, and which don't.

  • Universities UK, the Department for Innovation, Universites & Skills, and the British Universities Iraq Consortium released an ICG-authored report on the UK Higher Engagement with Iraq on 23 June.   Coverage on the report's release can be found in the following news articles:


  • Ian Moore joined ICG's Academic Advisory Board.  Ian serves as the Deputy Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Coventry University.  Previous appointments include Acting and Deputy Director of Alumni Relations at the Open University, as well as positions in the publishing industry.  Ian has been a key contributor to the Council of Advancement and Support of Eduation (CASE), for which he served for two years as alumni track chair.  In addition, he continues to oversee the alumni benchmarking project.  He was educated at Coventry, Open, and Sussex Universities.

  • Sheila Pakir joined ICG in June as Head of Research after graduating from Brown University with a B.A.  She holds a number of high academic honors, including having graduated with summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Brown.   In addition, she was a member of the Singapore World School Debating Championships team.

  • The Third Annual ICG Thought Leader Session took place at the NAFSA Annual Conference on 27 May. This year's TLS was dedicated to Looking Beyond the Global Economic Crisis - International Education 10 Years Out (proceedings).  Presenters included Andy Shaindlin from Caltech, Dr. Wedigo de Vivanco from the FU Berlin, David Wheeler from the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Dr. Daniel J. Guhr from ICG.  Britta Baron from the University of Alberta chaired the discussion.

  • Dr. Maurits van Rooijen joined ICG's Academic Advisory Board.  Maurits will soon retire from his position of Vice-President International at the University of Westminster.  Previous appointments include PVC at Victoria University (Australia) and Vice-President at Leiden.  He currently serves as President of the Compostela Group of Universities as well as the World Association for Co-operative Education.  Maurits is a frequent and global contributor to international higher education both as a practitioner and author.

 

  • Invitations to the Third Annual ICG Thought Leader Session at NAFSA on 27 May have been issued. This year, the TLS is dedicated to Looking Beyond the Global Economic Crisis - International Education 10 Years Out.  It uses the current global economic crisis as a jumping off point.  But rather than focusing on today's tactical issues, the session looks at long term trends and explores strategic change scenarios. Themes touched upon include economic and policy trends, the role of alumni, the impact of technology, institutional strategy setting, and global competition dynamics.  Presenters include Andy Shaindlin from Caltech, Dr. Wedigo de Vivanco from the FU Berlin, and David Wheeler from the Chronicle of Higher Education.  Britta Baron from the University of Alberta will chair the discussion.

  • The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) published an article on Brave Net World in the January 2009 edition of CURRENTS.  The underlying research was based on a global survey of online communities and higher education to which three ICG members substantially contributed: Mr. Louis E. Alexander (MIT & ICG Advisory Board member), Dr. Daniel J. Guhr (ICG Managing Director), and Mr. Andrew Shaindlin (Caltech and ICG Advisory Board member).

  • On 14 January, ICG rolled out its 2009 International Strategy Seminars schedule.  In 2009, ICG offers 12 dedicated seminar topcis across four major thematic areas (strategy & planning, competition, student recruiting, and regional focus seminars).

 

  • At the end of January, ICG will run the first set of seminars on Understanding Risk and Managing for Opportunities in the Global Economic Crisis in Singapore, Melbourne, Brisbane, and London.  This seminar centers on a detailed briefing on the origins and complexity of the global fiscal and economic crisis, coupled with an analysis of the impact of this crisis on student mobilty funding, mobility patterns, and institutional risk management.

Guhr participated and spoke on The challenge to institutional alumni relations - Why moving to a network-centric, fluid approach is imperative to stay relevant.
  • ICG contributed to three events at the CASE Leadership Summit in New York from 13 to 15 July:
  • Third, ICG held a Roundtable on the Future of Alumni Relations with representatives from higher education institutions and solution vendors.
  • Max Senges, who recently obtained a Ph.D. from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in Barcelona and now works as a US-based knowledge entrepreneur.
